If Tinker Hatfield is the Godfather of Nike silhouettes, then the Air Max 90 is his Sonny Corleone. The third edition to the Air Max line, The 90s have been a staple in the sneaker world since they debuted in 1990. This was Nike’s and Tinker’s first design to transcend performance-based styles into a fashion icon!
The 90s was known for its attitude and unmatched style. Tinker Hatfield wanted to bottle that energy to produce a light-weight, breathable silhouette originally known as the Air Max III. The mesh upper design allowed your feet to breathe while running, and that style is preferred more than its leather counterpart.
With a bulkier look and subtle Nike branding, the Air Max 90 focused on adding more technology to provide greater cushioning and support. The AM90 comes in more colorways then we can count, but the most sought after is the infamous ‘Infrared’ colorway. Used more for a trick then anything else, the ‘Infrared’ colorway made the Air Max 90’s Air unit look thicker than it actually was.
Tinker Hatfield’s Air Max 90 was the premier running silhouette for Nike when it was introduced to the world. The 90s were the first sneaker in Nike’s catalog to use the “Infrared” colorway even though some considered that colorway was introduced on the Air Jordan 6, another Tinker design. From the track to the runway, the Air Max 90 has dominated as a performance shoe and a cultural icon to make it a sneaker staple for sneakerheads everywhere.
It has been over 20 years since Tinker Hatfield debuted the Air Max 90, and the silhouette is still going strong today, making it a true timeless classic. Check out our collections and pick up your first pair or re-up on your favorite colorway right here: http://www.kicksusa.com/nike-air-max-90.html
