By the 90s, Tinker Hatfield solidified his name as one of the greatest sneaker designers ever. Hit after hit kept coming every time Tinker would pick up a pen and go to the sketch board. His most famous muse was, of course, Michael Jordan, and Tinker wanted to provide MJ with a brand new silhouette for the 1990-91 NBA season. The Air Jordan 6 was Tinker Hatfield’s new creation, and with it, Michael Jordan finally reached the top of the mountain!
Tinker used a lot of his trademark style when creating the Air Jordan 6. The soles of the AJ 6 were translucent rubber and also featured a Visible Air window, a staple in Tinker Hatfield designs. Borrowing inspiration from something in Michael Jordan’s life, the heel tab was to mimic the look of MJ’s Porsche. A new innovation Tinker made for the AJ 6 was the subtle two hole pull on the tongue which allowed easier access when putting on the sneakers, something that has since been borrowed on multiple silhouettes.
Michael Jordan went on to win his first NBA Championship against the Los Angeles Lakers while wearing the Air Jordan 6. It was the defining moment in his career when we saw the early flashes of the GOAT. During the regular season, MJ collected his 5th straight scoring title, his second MVP award, and then in The Finals he won the Finals MVP.
The duo of Tinker Hatfield and Michael Jordan were like the early days of Martin Scorsese and Robert DeNiro or Martin Scorsese and Leo DeCaprio now, every time they would link up it was a win-win. The Air Jordan 6 will be forever known as the silhouette that MJ won his first ever NBA Title in and his second Olympic gold medal with the famous Dream Team. Tinker and MJ will both go down as the GOAT in their respected fields, and the Air Jordan 6 was a big part of their success!
